Chainsaw Wood Carving

Many artists are now exploring the art of chainsaw wood carving. The art is a natural extension their skill set. It often includes a combination traditional carving techniques and contemporary designs. Since the 1960s, Crager and Tracie Dugas have been carving beautiful wood pieces. In between shows, they try to get home as much as possible to help out with painting and staining. His daughters have become involved in his work, sometimes helping with painting and staining. They also prefer to use white pine, which is lighter and less likely to crack.

Rich Anderson

Rich Anderson is a chainsaw wood carve artist from Reedsport, Oregon. He is a native of Poughkeepsie and lives with his wife and son. Anderson is a graduate in fine arts with several degrees. He also teaches art to pre-K to fifth graders. Anderson has carved sculptures all over Long Island. He also has sculptures from Colorado. His works include sculptures made from corn ear and standing trees. He is currently working on a sign to Youngs Farm in Riverhead.

The $400 chainsaw lets him create intricate sculptures that would have taken days to chisel from a tree. Chainsaw wood carving makes it a better choice than hammers, chisels, and hammers. They can also be recycled. Anderson markets his business via word of mouth. Anderson carved a massive cobra for Wading Rive and a great-blue heron as a mechanic.

Tracie Dugas

Tracie Dugas created this life-sized wizard from wood. It is a stunning example of her skills as a chainsaw wood carver. The 49-year-old woman lives in Clare (Nova Scotia), between Digby and Yarmouth. The chainsaw woodcarver was one of many artists who presented their work during Canada Day Weekend in Sydney, Nova Scotia. While tourists were flooding Sydney's waterfront, locals had the chance to see the chainsaw artist while enjoying the short dry spell.

Tim Crager

Tim Crager was not an artist. He was only moderately skilled with a chainsaw. However, six years ago his passion for carving made him a full-time carver. Crager has sold over $1 million in carvings throughout the Eastern U.S. Crager was born in Garrett in Eastern Kentucky and grew up following a chainsaw woodcarver at work. Crager was attracted to the art's unique style and he gave his boss his two-week notice.

Crager favors white pine over other wood types because it is easily accessible from tree trimming companies. However, many people prefer other kinds of wood. Crager works with the grain of wood as a guide and let the saw do the rest. Although Crager is usually clear about what he intends to do before he starts a project, he can change his mind at any time. For small projects, it takes less than an hour. Large carvings can take 33 to 35hrs.

Don Scoggins

Don Scoggins is an expert chainsaw and wooden carver. His wood carvings feature intricate details and many animals. His creations have attracted the attention of both tourists and neighbours. Blue Arrow Farm's entry and coffee shop is adorned by chainsaw sculptures so detailed and large that they can be seen from all angles. Blue Arrow Farm is owned and managed by Don Oriolo. Kacie Oriolo, Don Oriolo’s husband, met while participating in a New Jersey State Fair competition for chainsaws.

The 15-year old wood carver was awarded the award at a Reedsport, Oregon competition. Although he was an experienced wood carver, he had never used one before. His carvings now include an otter, a mother bear and a squirrel peeking out of a tree. And now, he's ready to compete at the National Chainsaw Carving Competition.

FAQ

Which woods are good to use for furniture-making?

Woods are classified based on their hardness. Softwoods include cedar and pine as well as cedar and cedar. They're often used for outdoor furniture because they don't rot easily. Hardwoods include oak, maple, mahogany, and teak. They are generally indoors as they don't weather well outside.

What is the minimum amount I will need to start?

Because each project is unique there are no exact numbers. These factors will help you get an estimate of how much money is needed.

  • Materials cost
  • Tools and equipment
  • Time spent working on this project
  • Your hourly rate
  • How much profit do you expect to earn
  • Whether you plan to hire help

Start small, if possible. You can make simple boxes or picture frames if you're just getting started. You will gain more experience and be able to tackle larger projects.

Do you have any other information I should know about woodworking and/or the process of making it?

It is easy to underestimate the amount work involved with furniture construction. The hardest part of the process is actually finding the right wood. It is difficult to choose between the various types of wood.

Another problem is the fact that not all wood has the same properties. Some woods will crack or warp with time. Others will split or crack. These are important considerations to make before you purchase wood.

How can I keep my shop organised?

The first step toward keeping your workshop clean and organized is to set aside a designated area for storing tools. You want your tools to stay clean and free from debris and dust. Hang tools and accessories using pegboard hooks.

How can I tell what kind of wood I am working with?

Always check the label before purchasing wood. The label should detail the wood species, its moisture content and whether it has been treated or not.

What's the time taken to finish a piece furniture?

It depends on what size piece of furniture you have. Smaller projects like boxes and picture frames can be finished within one day. Larger projects like tables and desks take many days. It takes time for the wood to be stained and sealed properly.

How To

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will demonstrate how to join two pieces together of wood. We will use the pocket hole joint, which is drilling holes in the wood to join them. This method works great if your wood is straight and smooth. Try dowel joinery instead if your wood doesn't look straight. These are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. You will need to measure and mark the exact location of your pocket hole joint. You will then drill 3/4" deep holes through each piece of wood with a jigsaw, handheld drilling machine, or hand-held drill.
  2. Sand Smooth. The wood's edges can be sanded to prevent splitting.
  3. Glue Together Apply glue to both the ends of the wood. Allow it to sit for approximately 5 minutes before you clamp the pieces together.
  4. Connect the pieces. Once the glue has dried, clamp the pieces together so they are flush.
  5. Trim Joinery. After the glue dries completely, trim off any excess wood around the joint.

Be sure to leave enough space between each piece so that they can be turned inside-out.
