How To

How to stain wood

Stain wood is a process that involves applying chemicals to the surface of wood, which changes its color. This chemical reaction causes the wood to change from white to brownish red. The most common type of wood used for staining is oak, although many other types of wood can be stained.

There are many ways to stain wood surfaces. Mixing the stain in a solvent such as turpentine and spraying it onto the wood is one method. Other methods use a solution of water and dye applied directly to the wood. Stains can also be mixed into paints and varnishes, becoming part of the finish coating.

Preparing the surface is the most important step in staining wooden surfaces. The wood must be thoroughly cleaned to remove all grease and dirt. Sanding smoothens scratches and rough spots. Then you must decide what kind of stain you want to use. There are two basic kinds of stains: penetrating stains and non-penetrating stains. Penetrating stains penetrate deeper into the wood than non-penetrating ones, making them ideal for dark colors such as mahogany. Penetrating stains are best paired with lighter colors, such as maple.

Once you have decided on the stain type that you want, get your tools ready. The best tool for applying stains is a paintbrush. It allows you to evenly distribute the liquid over the surface. After you're done painting, make sure to have some rags handy to remove any excess stain. If you plan on mixing the stain yourself make sure that you have enough containers to hold the different components.

After you have prepared the materials, you can clean the area where you want to stain the wood. To remove dirt and dust, use warm water and soap. Wipe the entire piece of furniture with a rag dampened with clean water. Make sure you eliminate any loose debris, especially if you plan to stain darker wood.

The stain should be applied next. The stain can be applied by spraying or brushing the stain onto one end of the furniture. Move slowly and carefully along the grain of your wood until you reach its opposite end. Be careful not to let the stain drip off the wood's edge. Before proceeding to the next step, let the stain dry thoroughly.

Clear polyurethane is used to protect the painted surfaces. Apply three coats with polyurethane. Allow the third coat, which should dry overnight, to dry before sanding.
